Big Nerikomi Block Cat
Nerikomi Block Cat is a take on feline coats. No two cats have the same cat coat and just like cats these ceramic Block Cats too are covered in one of a kind pattern.
Each Block Cat is hand-built using a technique known as Nerikomi, in which unique patterns are achieved by layering and stacking Earthenware and Terracotta clay bodies in various arrangements. The patterns are within the clay body and not just on the surface. They are all one-of-a-kind creations, with no possibility of reproducing identical patterns. Every Block Cat undergoes two firing processes and is finished with a transparent glaze.

After a decade of working as a graphic designer, Tosha switched to being a ceramic artist. The transition was gradual but a sure one. The knowledge that she possess right now was all collected over time by observing other artists, being in their company and questioning what intrigues her towards the material.
Her main focus since she started working with clay extensively was techniques and forms. It was only recently that she realised a lot of the ceramic work is influenced by her graphic design practice. The way she look at shapes, the clean constructions, repetition of forms, the way she shoot and present her work. It’s the physical and tactile aspect of it that made Tosha jagged want to do this more than work digitally.
She started off with small sculptural pieces called Block Cats and that led her to creating a host of new things which are far away from it visually and structurally, but clay is the medium that tied them all together. She mostly use Earthenware and Terracotta clay bodies that are locally sourced. Since she started, her entire practice has been about hand building, throwing on the wheel is a small part of it but she enjoy the process of creating each piece by hand from a lump of clay.
